Why did you choose to pledge?
I chose to pledge because I viewed this fraternity as my first true opportunity to have genuine brothers. With only one blood sibling in my sister, I had always wanted a big brother, and through Pi Upsilon Pi I have found myself a true family at this school. Following my freshman year, I was intending to transfer to UMASS, and joining this fraternity has given me a reason to stay here.

I wanted to be a part of soothing bigger than myself, and in my eyes, bigger than MCLA. Being a part of this organization was a goal of mine shortly after arriving to MCLA. Why did you choose to pledge?
I chose to pledge for several different reasons. I'd never been good at making friends before I came to college – especially guy friends. My roommate Nick, and I socialized a lot on the weekends, and we got to know a lot of Pines guys, mainly because they had the best on campus events. Nick and I started to hang out with this academically diverse group of guys, and when they mentioned that they were interested in us joining in the spring, we looked at each other and decided that this is how we wanted to spend our college years – in a brotherhood. We've never looked back, and I've never regretted a thing.

I chose to pledge this fraternity for many reasons, one of my main reasons to join Pi Upsilon Pi is because I wanted to get involved on campus and off campus in activities such as community service and giving back to the community any way possible. Another main reason why I joined was because I wanted to be a part of the Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser that our fraternity does every year. I wanted to be a part of changing an individual's life in a positive way.  I also joined Pi upsilon Pi because of the social aspect. Why did you choose to pledge?
During my freshman year at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts there were many reasons that were clear to me why I wanted to pledge Pi Upsilon Pi. I visited the college before graduating high school and one of my first experiences was meeting the fraternity at a social gathering. Instantly I realized that the fraternity is more than just an organization, it’s a family bound together by traditions and support for one another. The role of a family has always been a key aspect throughout my entire life, which was my main reason for pledging. When I was 17 months old I was adopted from El Salvador during a time of extreme poverty and moved to New York with a new family. As soon as I was able to fully understand how lucky it was for me to gain a new life, I still wanted to know everything about where I came from. Today I am still connected with my birth family and foster family who live in El Salvador. At the point of my arrival to MCLA I wanted my amount families and strong bonds to grow, which inspired me to join the Rugby club, write for the newspaper, and pledge. Families always have their differences in ideas and solutions to problems but that feedback helps everyone react individually to find the best possible outcome. Those qualities will never be forgotten after college, and who knows where we will all go, however we will always be the Pines family. A fraternity isn’t for everyone, and some people that say letters don’t matter, but they never got to wear these.
